Online Mentorship Programs: Cash in on Your Expertise
Whether you're a former retail store owner known for your creativity, a championship bridge player, or a psychotherapist with a long current waiting list for openings, if you possess expertise that makes colleagues and aficionados want your pearls of wisdom, you can create a new income stream with an online mentorship program. Such a program charges a fee for people to sit at your feet and learn from you. The program would have a special focus (not for everyone) and offer information, resources, advice, insider tips and problem solving. While a mentorship program could take place in the "real world," it is especially easy to set it up, promote and run it online. Before I created my online mentorship program, MarketingforMore.com, in the fall of 2003, I did extensive research on fees and features of other programs. I looked most closely at seven examples whose fees ranged from $30 a month to just less than $600 a month. At the lower end of this spectrum, $30 a month didn't give members very much personal access to the expert around whom the program revolved, while at nearly $600 a month, a member received just about unlimited private access to the expert. Likewise, the program with the lowest fee accepted anyone who applied, while the higher fees required application, with no guarantee of acceptance. Features in the online mentorship programs I looked at included some or all of these: * Topical teleclasses or conference calls * Member newsletter * Member-only articles * Feedback and advice from the designated expert * Discounts on products and services * Free books, tapes or reports * Free in-person meetings * Group discussion board You should do this research yourself to see who has a program similar to yours, what they charge and what they offer. Join a couple of mentorship programs and learn from what you like and don't like in what they do. When you decide to go ahead, you can either buy a readymade software program for running such an online program or create your own web site. Membergate (www.membergate.com) is the best and most reliable such tool, with a one-time licensing fee of $3,500 and up. Since my husband is a programmer, we built our own site with a password-protected area and an online application for prospective members to fill out. However much or little you decide to charge, it's essential for members to feel they're getting their money's worth, and that means that you must offer quite a lot of member-only content, with fresh material added often. I not only quit one mentorship site but also asked for my money back because it didn't live up to the promise of listings that were updated daily and the site owner appeared to be nowhere in evidence. Be flexible in what you're willing to offer members. I started off thinking that a member-only discussion board was the best way for members to get feedback and advice from me, but I learned that while some members loved that, others preferred the exchange of ideas in a live conference call. So I added those to my program. Because I thoroughly researched and planned before launching my online mentorship program and have remained determined to have members think they're getting an unbelievable deal, MarketingforMore.com got off to a successful start and has continued to grow. In this particular case, the audience was high net worth individuals who tend to be conservative, and who are not mainstream media lovers or consumers. When they do consume media, it tends to be conservative talk radio or FOX News. They trust opinions of friends and colleagues, not the media. So, advertising is not the way to reach them. We will launch a referral program and try to place the client's editorial material in business-oriented media and on local talk radio in his key markets. Also, we are implementing a speaker's bureau to get him in front of civic and professional groups. So, you can see how defining the audience using demographic, geographic and psychographic elements dictates our marketing approach from a tactical perspective. Your current customers hold the key to geographic, demographic and psychographic attributes of your key audience. Survey them to find out: Why did your clients buy your product? Why did they buy from you and not a competitor? What made them buy from you at a specific point in time? Was it an impulse decision or did they ponder it? What do they like the most/least about your product? What is the benefit of the product? Are they willing to refer others to your product? What is their age? Are they readers? What do they read? Do they watch TV; listen to the radio; read newspapers? What is their most trusted media source? These are just a few things you'll want to learn about your audiences. If you delve into what makes them tick, it will put your marketing on steroids. And, as Martha would say, "that's a good thing." Customer Retention with a Personal Touch Personal contact with customers is a crucial element in the success of any new business ? and it's one of the most common casualties of growth. As a company grows, the president tends to fade away into his or her office. That can lead to loss of leverage right at the point when a company is starting to take off and needs it most. The whole topic is complicated and a tad intimidating. A lot is riding on the ad's ability to pull in more business. Advertisers don't feel they understand Yellow Page issues well enough to make the "right choice." So they often avoid thinking about it altogether. Even when they realize their ad isn't drawing much business, an advertiser is reluctant to make changes. To what? So, what's the rush? The Yellow Page directory only comes out once a year. Whether an ad performs like a dynamo or a disappointment, the business is stuck with it until the next directory comes around. So there's plenty of time to consider what could make it better. But somehow, people seldom do. But at some point, the ad shifts from back burner to urgent, as the next directory's deadline approaches. Decisions about what it will look like are often made "on the fly." So it never gets the scrutiny it deserves, so it can deliver the most "bang for the buck." Time pressure (coupled with the urging of the Sales Rep) leads many business owners to just "stick with what I have." That decision means hardly having to think about it at all. For another year, anyway. But that's not the best strategy - just the quickest. A business owner should carefully consider the wisdom of each aspect of their directory listing - wording, images, size, options, which directories or headings, etc. Change involves more than the ad's appearance Never change your ad just to make it prettier. Modifications should help you connect even better with directory user's needs. That involves focusing your message and distinctive style (which is communicated in a glance) so it grabs them. Changing your ad can involve increasing or decreasing its size or features (or going in an unrelated direction). Resist the temptation to over-spend for the value received (as most advertisers do). Costs should bear some relationship to the amount of business coming through them - which involves tracking your calls and sales. Consider directory costs relative to all the ways customers find you. Where does most new business really come from? Are marketing dollars better spent elsewhere? Figure the source of new business before getting caught by secondary questions like: how large, or which headings, or whether options like color make sense. Recognize the changes affecting directory usage. Buyers aren't relying on the print directory like they used to. Many use the Internet Yellow Pages (IYP) and search engines focused with local terms. Think about whether to direct some directory dollars there. Update your information to keep it current Business changes occur all the time. Don't forget to bring your data up to date when placing your next year's advertising. Business changes affecting your ad - Change of business name, or splitting into more than one company or brand - Added or different phone numbers; same with addresses - Add your Web site address (domain URL) or email address - Changed your policies, hours, services (like free delivery) - Additional product lines or services (like classes or supplies) - Update years in service (if in your ad) - New awards, degrees, etc. that can bolster credibility - Adding a partner (especially for professions) - Remove what's no longer true or relevant Think long and hard about what will make you stand out in the directory during the year (not just at renewal time). The success of your business could depend on how well your ad does its job.
